OpenVMS for the Hobbyist: Industrial Strength at No Cost
Robert Gezelter, Software Consultant

Abstract :

OpenVMS, the industrial strength operating system with many unique features is now available at no cost on a hobbyist (non-Commercial) basis. The ready availability of low cost used VAX and Alpha hardware and the availability of freeware and hobbyist PC based emulators, make OpenVMS an interesting platform for hobbyists. Since it inception in 1997, the OpenVMS Hobbyist program has issued hundreds of thousands of licenses for the use of OpenVMS and its layered products by hobbyists. This session will provide an overview of the OpenVMS Hobbyist program, and how it can be used.

Bio :

Robert Gezelter is a Senior Member of IEEE and an alumnus of the IEEE Computer Society?s Distinguished Visitors Program. He holds BA and MS degrees in Computer Science from New York University. He is a contributor to the Computer Security Handbook (2002) and the Handbook of Information Security (2005). He has spoken and written extensively on operating systems, networks, performance, security, tools and similar areas. He is in private practice and maintains his offices in Flushing, New York. He can be contacted via his firm at http://www.rlgsc.com.

11:20 am to 1:20 pm
Workshop on Advanced Web Site Development using Open Source Libraries
Mike Barlow, Sensor Technologies

Abstract :

For Web Site development the newest, slickest and easiest libraries to use is ExtJS. You will learn how to make a web site do fancy things. Simple but snazzy looking "panels" with built in drag-and-drop capability, a page that looks like a portal (but "technically" isn't), tab panels which load their content via Ajax, and much more... So if you want to keep up on the latest in Javascript library usage, come to this talk and go home with some neat new tools in your virtual pocket.

Bio :

Mike has been involved in the computer industry since practically the start of personal computing. He is currently working as a support contractor at Fort Monmouth and is involved in architecting and developing computer software. Mike has worked with the Lotus Notes/Domino platform since 1991 and has lectured at several Lotusphere Conferences. In recent years he has concentrated on web-based applications as AJAX and JSON.

Financial Market Turning Points Identified Using Neural Networks
Donn Fishbein, Neuroquant

Abstract :

Technical analysis can provide a scientific, verifiable method to trade financial markets. Yet at first glance the field appears overwhelming. There are thousands of technical indicators, each with one or more parameters, available to construct trading systems. Which indicators and parameters to choose, and how to weight each, is a daunting task. Artificial neural networks and genetic algorithms can assist in this task. In contrast to previous talks, which focused on trend identification, this talk will explore the identification of turning points in financial market trends and its use in short term trading. The long term performance of trading systems introduced in previous years will also be reviewed.

Bio :

Donn S. Fishbein, MD, PhD, is a physician and scientist who has investigated and traded the financial markets for 25 years. His particular area of interest is mathematical systems with biological roots. For the past seven years his focus has been on hybrid artificial neural network and genetic algorithm systems, both for end-of-day trading and more recently for daytrading systems. He has lectured on these subjects, describing profitable systems for trading equities, exchange traded funds, and index futures. He contributes trading signals to a neural net trading website, has offered consulting services and private development of trading systems based on these technologies, and is presently engaged in the launch of a hedge fund based on these strategies.
